She was a model student who was the pride of her family but 20-year-old Cyrish Magalang’s life was unceremoniously taken by 49 stab wounds made by two drug addicts on the day she received her first paycheck – and her family had been waiting to celebrate the joyous milestone with her!

The youngest daughter of Juancho and Milagros Magalang, Cyrish was the pride of the family. She had always wanted to become a flight stewardess and ride airplanes so she took up Tourism at the University of Santo Tomas (UST). Throughout her studies, the model student was serious and focused for she wanted to fulfill her dreams.

Mommy Milagros would later recall how she received a paper from Cyrish right before the graduation day. She thought it was another bill from school and she didn’t want to open the envelope but when she finally did, she was pleasantly surprised to find an announcement from UST that Cyrish will be graduating as cum laude!

Soon after graduation, Cyrish would land a job at the SMX Convention Center as Guest Services Assistant. It was surely a step towards fulfilling her dream career.

Mommy Milagros was happy to see her daughter enjoying her job. She also liked that Cyrish’s shift is just from 9AM to 6PM and that the convention center was an easy commute to and from their home. She felt at ease knowing that her daughter is safe.

On October 30, 2012, to celebrate her first paycheck, Cyrish promised to bring donuts and other treats for her family. That evening, her siblings and their kids waited for Cyrish – and the kids were so excited that they wouldn’t even brush their teeth in anticipation for the donuts their aunt will bring.

But Cyrish never arrived…

By 9PM, the family felt fearful that something bad had happened to Cyrish for she was not the type to go out with friends after work, especially because she promised to treat the family on her first paycheck.

News of a dead body with 49 stab wounds discovered the following day would break the family’s heart for they discovered it was their beloved Cyrish! The news shocked the nation – and the police would soon apprehend the perpetrators: two brothers who admitted that they were under the influence of drugs when they killed Cyrish.

Tricycle driver Roel Gacita Jr. and his brother, Rolin Gacita, confessed to the crime and apologized to Cyrish’s family, saying that they never meant to kill or rape her but accidentally stabbed her with a screw driver because “she got noisy”.

Although the family has found some justice in the brothers’ incarceration, this does not change the fact that their dear daughter was gone – and all because she was robbed by drug addicts who stabbed her repeatedly because they were afraid someone will notice what they were doing!

Cyrish’s story is just one of the many similar stories of innocent people killed in cold blood by drug-crazed addicts – and this story would once again go viral years after it happened.

Now that Pres. Rodrigo Duterte and PNP Chief Ronald dela Rosa are fighting hard against drugs, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and many people are crying over the loss of more than 500 suspected drug pushers who seemingly died from extra judicial killings – and it angers a lot of Filipino citizens that these people were more concerned with the lives of these suspected criminals when there are thousands of innocent lives lost because of drugs!
